Our cohort is slowly building up! We have 91 women enrolled so far and have had over 60 births! Congratulations to everyone who has welcomed home their new baby! Best wishes and health!

The Aboriginal Birth Cohort asks participants about their lives at various points in the infant’s early life. A brief description of each visit is provided below.

During pregnancy

We will meet with you in person to gather the following:

  • Informed consent to participate in this study
  • Contact details, so we can arrange to meet with you for the next visit
  • Information about you and the father of your child, including:
    • Medical history (medical conditions or medications you, the father of your child, or your immediate family have had)
    • Pregnancy history (Have you been pregnant before, any complications)
    • Health behaviours (diet, exercise, smoking, etc)
    • Your environment (pets, smoking around the house, etc)
    • Demographics (Education, employment, etc)
    • Physical measurements (Height, weight, etc)
    • OGTT (Blood test to determine gestational diabetes)
    • Optional biological samples (Blood, urine, saliva)

In return for your time and participating in this important study, you will receive a Walmart gift card.

Baby’s Birth

If you consented during pregnancy (and are still okay with it at birth), we will collect a placenta sample and/or a cord blood sample during the birth of your baby.

After the birth, we will review the birth charts to gather information about the pregnancy and birth, including any complications you had during pregnancy or birth, measurements of the baby at birth, timing of delivery, mode of delivery.

We will also visit you to deliver a gift bag and take measurements of your newborn (length, weight, etc)

6 weeks and 6 months

We will contact you to see how you are doing, and to keep our contact information up to date.

We will also collect information about what you feed your baby, and the size of baby from the charts.

1 year

We will meet with you in person to gather the following about you and your child:

  • Current contact information
  • Physical measurements (height, weight, etc)
  • How you have been feeding your child
  • Your health behaviours (Diet, exercise, smoking, etc)
  • Your environment (pets, smoke exposure, etc)
  • Medical history (any medications or medical conditions of you, the father of your child, or the child since the pregnancy visit)
  • Child’s vaccinations
  • Update on demographics
  • Optional biological samples (Blood, urine from you and/or baby; stool and/or saliva from baby)

In return for your cooperation and diligence in continuing to participate in this study, you will receive a second Walmart gift card.

2 year

We will call you to see how you are doing, and gather the following information:

  • Physical measurements (you and your child)
  • Update on medical history
  • Update on child’s vaccinations
  • Update on your child’s diet

3 year

For this final visit, we will meet with you in person to gather the following about you and your child:

  • Physical measurements (height, weight, etc)
  • Health behaviours (Diet, exercise, etc)
  • Medical history (any medications or medical conditions of you, the father of your child, or the child since the 1 year visit)
  • Your environment (pets, smoke exposure, etc)
  • Child’s vaccinations
  • Update on demographics
  • Optional biological samples (Blood, urine, saliva (if blood/saliva not already given) from you and/or baby)

In return for your cooperation and diligence in continuing to participate in this study, you will receive a third Walmart gift card.
